Benkler has recently released his text "the wealth of networks" as a wiki and a download, as well as that old media the dead tree format. The author looks to be encouraging the idea of derivative works, it seems in the sense of enhancing and adding to the original work, perhaps as annotations or summaries or footnotes, and so on. I haven't read any of this text yet, beyond what is written at the wiki - the contents page - , but I will check out it when I get a free moment.
